Houston may have the exact opposite climate of the breezy Mediterranean, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t make for a perfect home for Café Azur, Montrose’s newest restaurant. The Houston Chronicle reports that restaurateur Sidney Degaine has opened Café Azur at 4315 Montrose. The restaurant is inspired by the cuisine and vibe of its namesake, France’s Côte d'Azur, and will feature Mediterranean cuisine inspired by the region and prepared by a chef trained in France.

But compared to other large cities, our bistro-heavy leanings dwell in an era somewhere between the fall of nouvelle cuisine and the modern, Joël Robuchon-influenced cooking that arose from its ashes. The Parisian-style steak-frites and croques madames of the world are also far more common in Houston than the lighter dishes of the French Riviera.

We were sad to see Brasserie Max & Julie leave the local dining scene – especially as news of its shuttering came so soon after Au Petit Paris let the world know that it, too, was going out of business. Two cozy, independently owned French favorites gone, just like that. So, we were chuffed to learn that Café Azur had taken over the Max & Julie location on Montrose near Richmond.
